Photorealism

Working for the most part on fine-grained Belgian linen, George Murphy typically “confronts” the viewer with closeup renditions of architectural subject matter in direct sunlight.  His compositions are bold and essentially abstract, while, at the same time, offering a wealth of closely observed detail.  Organic forms of shadow and shrubbery are frequently contrasted with more geometric, structural components in such a way as to achieve an elegant balance between the formal and the lyrical.
